Put simply, destructive testing is the physical destruction of a test/product sample to evaluate its characteristics. The main benefit of destructive testing is to help reduce product failures, therefore reducing the risk of a costly failures post production.
The sample is put through rigorous tests to assess its hardness, strength and toughness. The tests are carried out through the expert use of tools or machines. These produce an irreversible alteration to composition or dimensional geometry.
Several destructive testing methods are used to determine a materials integrity or performance. Typically, the tests involve sectioning and/or breaking the material, then evaluating various chemical, mechanical and/or physical characteristics.
Rotech carries out destructive testing for multiple sectors across a large range of industries including aerospace, automotive, energy and power (including renewable energy), oil and gas, manufacturing, foundry and castings, plus welding and fabrication.
Destructive Testing Services Include:
- Tensile testing
- Hardness testing including Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers, microhardness and Knoop* testing.
