Salt Spray Testing

Salt spray testing is an accelerated corrosion test, used to evaluate the coatings and surface treatments’ efficiency in resisting corrosion. 

Coatings or finishes applied to products act as a protective barrier to the material. The salt spray test aims to analyse the quality of the coating or finish, and the levels of corrosion resistance or corrosion susceptibility that the product may experience over time in real-life conditions.

The Process

Ferrous and non-ferrous test pieces and coated exposure panels are placed into an enclosed cabinet chamber.  They are then exposed to a continuous, indirect spray of salt solution, made by dissolving approximately 5 parts by mass of sodium chloride in 95 parts by mass of de-ionised water. The exposure zone of the chamber is then maintained at a temperature of 35.0°C ± 2°C.

The duration of the salt spray test is determined by the application standard or the customer’s own specification/requirements.

The extent of corrosion on each specimen is evaluated every 24 hours and details noted. At the end of the specified test period, final evaluation is made in accordance with the applicable standard/customer specification and provided in a detailed test report that includes pictures. 

Neutral Salt Spray Test Standards:

  • ASTM B117 – Standard practice for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus. 
  • BS EN ISO 9227 – Method for salt spray corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres.
